Strikers Tommy Smith and Nick Proschwitz will be leaving Brentford Football Club this summer as their contracts expire.

Tommy, 35, signed a one-year contract last summer after a successful trial.

He was informed by Rasmus Ankersen and Phil Giles, Co-Directors of Football at Brentford, that he would not be offered a new deal.

Nick, 28, joined The Bees from Hull City last summer.

Brentford have decided not to take up the option to extend his contract.

It will therefore expire at the end of June and Nick will leave Griffin Park.

Tommy – who has 18 years of professional football experience behind him, including spells at Watford, Derby County, Queens Park Rangers and Cardiff City among others – played 32 games for The Bees during the 2014/15 season and scored once, Brentford’s first goal of the Sky Bet Championship campaign against Charlton Athletic.

Nick spent the end of the season on loan at Sky Bet League One Coventry City.

He played 20 games for Brentford, scoring twice.

Phil Giles said: “We spoke with Tommy and Nick last week and informed them of our decision.

“No-one can doubt the commitment they both showed to Brentford FC during their time here.

“But we have to make decisions about the squad for next season and we do not see them as part of it.

“On behalf of everyone at the Club, I would like to thank them for all their efforts over the past ten months.”

Mark Warburton, Brentford Manager, added: “The quality that Tommy has displayed both on and off the pitch has been first class and he has made such a positive contribution to the overall team performance and in turn achievement.

“He has so much still to offer and I would urge him to continue playing at the highest level possible.”

Four players on loan at Brentford – Betinho, Chris Long, Alex Pritchard and Jon Toral – will be returning to their parent clubs and Richard Lee has retired.

The 32-year-old goalkeeper announced his intention to end his playing career at the start of 2015.

With Brentford’s season now over, Richard has formally ended his professional playing days.

He leaves Griffin Park having played 87 Brentford games since arriving in the summer of 2010.

Richard suffered with shoulder injuries during his time in West London but did enough to win the Supporters’ Player of the Year prize in 2011 and earn recognition for his penalty saving prowess.

Phil added: “We wish everyone that is leaving Brentford FC this summer all the best for the future and thank them for their contribution.

“Richard Lee has been a good servant to the Club over five years and he has a great relationship with the Brentford supporters.

“I am sure the fans will join me in thanking him for his efforts.

“We hope he enjoys his retirement.”

Mark said: “Richard has been an excellent mentor for the young keepers at the club as well as being an outstanding professional and a very talented goalkeeper.

“He has battled a series of injuries and yet never wavered in terms of his focus and application and I have no doubts that he will go on to forge a successful career in whatever field he chooses.”

Alex played 47 games for Brentford, on loan from Tottenham Hotspur, and scored 12 times.

Jon made 37 appearances during his loan from Arsenal and scored six times while Chris played 11 games while on loan from Everton and scored four goals and Betinho played one game during a loan from Sporting Clube de Portugal.

Mark added: “The contribution of the young loan players has been truly outstanding and they have played a big part in the positive steps forward made throughout the season.

“Alex Pritchard and Jon Toral have shown a maturity beyond their years and have been a credit to both themselves and their respective parent clubs.

“Likewise Chris Long came in and made an excellent impression and I have no doubts that all three will have a long and successful career in the game.”

As announced earlier, Kevin O’Connor has retired to take up a position as Development Squad Coach.

Mark said: “After such an outstanding contribution to the club from a playing perspective it is a pleasure to see Kevin undertake the transition from professional player to professional coach.

“He has so much knowledge and experience which will be supported by a sound coaching education and I have no doubts that he will progress to become an excellent coach or manager.”

The three Brentford players who ended the season on loan – Will Grigg, Sam Saunders and Nico Yennaris – will report back for pre-season training with The Bees in July.

They will join the other 20 contracted players: Jake Bidwell; Lewis Macleod; Tony Craig; Harlee Dean; Jonathan Douglas; Scott Hogan; Moses Odubajo; Alan McCormack; Marcos Tébar; Stuart Dallas; Jack Bonham; Alan Judge; Andre Gray; Toumani Diagouraga; Jota; Raphaël Calvet; James Tarkowski; David Button; Jack O’Connell and Daniel O’Shaughnessy at Jersey Road ahead of the start of the new season.

Phil added: “We have spoken to all the contracted players and made it clear to them we saw them as part of the immediate future at Brentford FC.

“Things can change quickly in football but it is our intention that all will return to pre-season training.

“They will be given a chance to impress the new Head Coach.

“This group have been fantastic for the Club this season and have proven how good they can be in the Championship.

“With a few additions we hope we can have an even better season in 2015/16.”
