Brentford Head Coach Dean Smith felt that his side got involved in Rotherham United’s style of game as The Millers took a priceless three points in their relegation battle after a 2-1 victory at The AESSEAL New York Stadium this afternoon. Matt Derbyshire put Neil Warnock’s side ahead midway through the first-half but The Bees were level by the break as Alan Judge converted from close range after his initial penalty was saved. Brentford were put under relentless pressure in the early stages of the second period but it looked like they had weathered the storm only for Danny Ward to strike the decisive blow with 20 minutes to play.

Speaking to Bees Player after the match Dean said his side had got involved in playing Rotherham’s game rather than imposing themselves on the match.

“We never got the ball down and we never played the football that we can,” said Dean. “We showed on Tuesday that we can pass the ball, draw people out and create opportunities but we didn’t do that at all second-half and we ended up getting involved in a tear up that they are better at than us. We wanted to impose our style of play on the game today and unfortunately our style didn’t win today.”

The Bees equaliser came after Richard Wood was adjudged to have brought down Sergi Canos inside the area. The decision incensed the home crowd and Dean felt his team gave the officials too many opportunities to award free-kicks to the hosts after the incident.

“We will learn to take on instructions a lot better,” said Dean. “I thought that it was a harsh penalty that we earned and the stadium became a cauldron of hate towards the officials. We felt that if we gave him an opportunity to make decisions in the second-half then he would do. Unfortunately we gave him enough opportunities to make decisions, some of them justified some of them unjustified. From the foul count to go from four in the first-half to 16 in the second-half is beyond me.”

Dean revealed after the match that there was good news on the injury front with Scott Hogan due to make his return from an 18-month injury lay-off in Monday’s Under-21 match against Crystal Palace at Griffin Park while Alan McCormack has returned to full training.

“Scott Hogan will be playing in an Under-21 game on Monday which is great for him,” said Dean. “We are not going to expect too much from Scott as he has been out for nearly two years now with some serious injuries. It will be great to see him back. Alan McCormack trained fully with us on Friday and he will train fully with us next week.”
