Goals from Farid El Alagui and Leon Redwood helped Brentford to complete an Under-21 Professional Development League Two South double over Premier League Swansea City.
The Bees scored early in each half as they beat the Welsh side, who won the Capital One Cup in February, 2-1 on a blustery afternoon.
The visitors pulled one back, capitalising on a mistake from trialist goalkeeper Nick Hamann, but Brentford never really looked like losing.
The teams matched up with three men in the centre of midfield and The Bees had the edge.
Emmanuel Oyeleke dominated the middle of the park, particularly in the later stages, and Swansea had few chances of note.
The Bees could probably have won more convincingly but for some poor decision making in the final third, not helped by a strong wind and a pitch that often made an extra touch a necessity.
It looked as if it would be a comfortable afternoon for The Bees in the early stages.
They pushed the visitors back by playing balls up to their three strikers – Antonio German, Luke Norris and El Alagui – and over the top for them to run on to.
The wind made it difficult for defenders to judge the flight of the ball and Swansea were often chasing back towards their own goal.
They gave away a number of corners and free kicks in the final third and when Brentford got the delivery right, they were extremely dangerous.
They could have scored within 90 seconds when Aaron Pierre headed against a post from a Jake Reeves free kick and German had a shot blocked soon after.
The opening goal, which looked inevitably from the first seconds, came just before the five minute mark.
Charlie Adams delivered a corner and El Alagui left his marker trailing in his wake to rise high and power a header home.
Sam Griffiths turned another Adams delivery wide from close range soon after before El Alagui robbed Joseph Jones and forced goalkeeper David Cornell in to a low save.
El Alagui headed straight at Cornell soon after before Oyeleke had a shot blocked and German saw an effort saved.
Swansea had offered very little, and in truth were not often in Brentford territory, but proved they could cause problems when Oyeleke had to clear a whipped corner from Lee Lucas out from underneath his own crossbar.
Alex Bray should probably have done better for the visitors when he got in behind Redwood from a Neil Taylor pass but he blasted across the face of goal and Kenji Gorre shot wide.
The game was more even as half time approached but still generally played in Swansea territory.
Brentford could not, however, turn that territory in to goals.
El Alagui headed wide after good work on the right by Griffiths and Norris blasted well over.
The Bees would have wanted a second goal to give them breathing space and got it 21 seconds in to the second half.
The ball was played up to German, he fed Norris and the striker slipped the ball to Redwood, the flying full back fired the ball past Cornell and in to the net.
He almost repeated the trick when Oyeleke burst forward but this time he shot across the face of goal.
Brentford appeared to be in complete control but gifted Swansea a way back in to the game.
The visitors pressed Reeves high up the pitch and he sought safety by passing back to goalkeeper Hamann, the stopper dithered, was robbed by Rory Donnelly, and then looked on helplessly as the striker rolled the ball home.
Donnelly shot over from distance as The Swans tried to prey on any nerves Hamann may have had but they could not get enough of the ball to really worry the hosts.
Brentford continued to make chances but once again did not use the ball as well as they could in the final third and potential openings were snuffed out.
Oyeleke had a shot blocked when a free kick was half cleared and German shot wide when he picked up an El Alagui knock down.
When an Oyeleke free kick was blocked neither Norris nor El Alagui could put it in and substitute Joey Jones shot wide soon after following good work by Griffiths.
Brentford’s best chance to add a third came following a sweeping move, Norris fed Redwood and the left back saw his shot tipped on to the post, Norris arrived to finish off but German swivelled off balance, taking the ball away from his fellow striker and blasting it wide.
Pierre headed over and Norris and German both missed the target with shots as Brentford sought he goal that would really kill the game off.
But in the end they did not need it to take the points and keep up the pressure on the teams at the top of the League Two South table.
