Brentford’s Development Squad scored a goal in each half as they beat Millwall in an Under-21 Professional Development League Two South match.

The Bees were good value for their 2-0 win and the victory was more comfortable than the score line might suggest.

An experienced Brentford side were simply a level above their visitors.

For the majority of the match they moved the ball with confidence and produced flowing football that was worth more than two goals.

They may not have created as much as they could have with their possession, but The Bees were comfortable in defence and never looked like losing.

Brentford dominated pretty much from first whistle to last and Millwall were forced to chase the ball for long periods.

Even a triple substitution – removing First Team players Nico Yennaris, James Tarkowski and Will Grigg just past the hour mark – did not interrupt their pattern of play.

Grigg scored the opener in the first half, capitalising when Millwall failed to deal with a corner, and Stuart Dallas slotted home the second to ensure the points went the way of the West London side.

While Millwall included players with Championship experience – Jack Smith, Mark Beevers, Josh Wright and goalkeeper Stephen Bywater – Brentford took the upper hand early on.

The midfield trio of Jake Reeves, Louis Hutton and Emmanuel Oyeleke created spaces that they should not really have been able to and The Lions could not deal with the pace of Josh Clarke on Brentford’s left.

They had to keep a deep line and that enable Dallas to drift inside and the full backs to get forward.

With Tarkowski masterful at the heart of defence and Kevin O’Connor slotting in and allowing others to play, Brentford were a joy to watch.

They could have been ahead inside 90 seconds when a quick Jack Bonham throw enabled first Raphaël Calvet and then Oyeleke move the ball on and release Grigg, the striker only had Bywater to beat but was unable to do so.

Millwall’s best spell probably came in the first 15 minutes, although they were still by no means in control.

Tarkowski blocked a Kyron Farrell shot and O’Connor cleared when Charlie Penny fired across the face of goal.

Grigg shot wide at the far post following a good run by Clarke and Bywater then beat the striker to a Yennaris cross.

Grigg shot wide again on the turn and a Smith shot was blocked for the visitors but by the half hour mark Brentford began to take control.

Their passing had left Millwall tired and gaps started to appear.

Tarkowski darted forward in to one before Yennaris fired across the face of goal and a Grigg shot deflected wide soon after when Reeves picked him out.

Another Tarkowski run created the first Brentford goal.

His burst left space for Dallas and although his shot was deflected wide, when the corner came in the ball dropped loose and Grigg smashed it home.

The first 15 minutes of the second half was quiet, with Millwall able to regroup and refresh at half time, but Brentford were on top.

Reeves shot wide for The Bees and after a fine move, Oyeleke’s pass set Dallas away and he pulled his shot inches wide of the far post when he should have scored.

A loose Clarke pass presented a chance to Millwall but Aiden O’Brien’s effort was blocked and when a free kick was half cleared Smith shot wide.

But they were rare attacks from the visitors.

Oyeleke fired an Aaron Pierre cross wide before Bywater saved a deflected Dallas effort and Clarke fired over.

Jake Goodman made a fine tackle to prevent Oyeleke finishing off a Calvet pass and with 15 minutes to go, Brentford had a second.

Clarke had a shot blocked and Millwall were unable to regroup to deal with the resulting throw-in, Oyeleke found space for a shot and although it was blocked, Dallas was on hand to slot home.

O’Brien shot over and then set up an opportunity that Jamie Philpot wasted by heading over when well-placed.

Clarke shot wide for The Bees and was then involved in a move that saw Reeves, Oyeleke and Joe Maloney set up Dallas but the winger fired against the crossbar from close range.

Josh Siafa fired over late on for the visitors before Reeves fired in a free kick that deflected wide.

O’Connor had a shot blocked at the death as Brentford continued to press but had to settle for a 2-0 win.
