In opposition
Rovers were placed in Group D in this competition- alongside Brentford- as well as Aston Villa Under-21s and Peterborough United Under-21s. Blackburn’s campaign in this competition began against the Bees at the Lancashire FA’s County Ground and it was Neil MacFarlane’s side who claimed all three points when Kyreece Lisbie struck late on in a 3-2 win for Brentford.
The Lancashire side then grabbed their first win of the competition as they beat Peterborough 3-2 away from home in late September before November saw them beat Aston Villa 2-1 on home soil. The return fixture against the Bees then came on 26 November as they travelled to the Laithwaite Community Stadium to claim a 2-1 win on the road to really boost their hopes of qualification from the group.
Rovers in group action earlier this season
Rovers were then beaten 4-0 on the road by Aston Villa before a final group match at Peterborough saw them lose 2-1, but despite that they were able to qualify for the round of 16. A trip to Huddersfield followed and they claimed a 4-1 win away from home at the John Smith’s Stadium with goals from Tyler Morton, Sam Gallagher and two from Harry Leonard as they qualified for the quarter-finals. It was the same scoreline on 10 March as Rovers booked their place in the semi-finals as they beat Southampton away from home when goals from James Edmondson, Harley O’Grady-Macken and Ethan Walker had the side ahead at the break before another from Zak Gilsenan on 47 minutes as he added another to finish off the tie.
The semi-final tie saw Blackburn host Nottingham Forest and they claimed a 6-1 win with a side that featured several players from the first team at Ewood Park such as Thomas Kaminski, Sorba Thomas, Scott Wharton, Tayo Edun and Ryan Hedges. The goals came from from Edun, Wharton, O’Grady-Macken, Callum Brittain and Charlie Weston (2) in a dominant display to set up the final with the Bees.
Previous meetings
The sides have met twice this season in this competition with both teams having claimed one win each. Last time they met was at the Laithwaite Community Stadium in November last year. Rovers claimed a 2-1 win on the day as Ryan Trevitt’s goal was cancelled out by two Ben Fyles strikes. Prior to that, the Bees won 3-2 up in Lancashire back in September.
