Goals either side of half-time - the first a tidy finish from Alex Gilbert, the second a thumping header from Tristan Crama - secured the victory for the Bees.

Luke Harris scored a stoppage-time consolation for the Cottagers, but it wasn't enough to prevent defeat in the west London derby.

Neil MacFarlane's side will face Blackburn U21 in the final, with details to be announced in due course.

Bees lead at the break thanks to Gilbert's strike

Brentford had the first real chance of the game inside five minutes, when Ryan Trevitt drove wide and cleverly cut the ball back to Alex Gilbert.

His central midfield partner latched onto the ball in a central area, but he fired over from inside the box.

Tony Ablade had the hosts’ first effort after he robbed Daniel Oyegoke robbed in central midfield, but he dragged his effort just wide.

Gilbert was involved again for the Bees again, when he picked up the ball inside the final third and played a smart reverse pass into the path of Fin Stevens.

The wing-back played a ball across the face of the goal but, when Val Adedoukun picked it up at the back post, his finish went wide.

And it was the Brentford captain, Gilbert, who scored the opener for MacFarlane’s side. Kristoffer Ajer won the ball back in the middle of the park and, when the ball fell to exciting winger Michael Olakigbe, he played Gilbert through on goal.

The 21-year-old slalomed past a couple of players in the box on the 25-minute mark, before passing the ball into the bottom-right corner of the net and past the Fulham goalkeeper.

Fulham, had some half-chances before the break, but nothing that really tested Matt Cox in the Brentford net.

Luc Rollet De Fougerolles picked up Gilbert’s clearance inside the area after a flurry of Fulham corner, but his shot was deflected wide, before Charlie Robinson couldn’t quite turn home from inside the area.

Crama's header is enough to secure win, despite late Fulham consolation

The second Bees goal came three minutes into the second half.

A corner was won by Gilbert, who picked up the ball just inside the Fulham half and drove towards the edge of the box unopposed.

His shot was tipped over the bar well by Fulham ‘keeper Alexander Borto, which led to the first corner of the half.

Gilbert then took the set piece that was headed home emphatically by Crama, doubling the Bees’ advantage.

With 20 minutes to go, Fulham were starting to apply the pressure. The Cottagers nearly pulled one back thanks to a mishit cross by Harvey Araujo, but the ball went straight into the side netting.

Fulham centre-forward Ablade was next to try his luck at the Brentford goal, after turning instinctively inside the box, before his first-time finish was saved well by Cox down low.

Going into stoppage time, Mark Harris had a half-volley go well wide of the post, before finishing with more accuracy in the third minute of added time, as his low finish found its way into the back of the net.

With less than a minute to go, Fulham were close to forcing extra time when Araujo’s header looped towards goal, but Cox tipped over to ensure the Bees secured their place in the final, where they'll face Blackburn U21.

MacFarlane: That win epitomises our season

A proud B team head coach Neil MacFarlane was full of praise for his young side as they sealed themselves a place in the final of the Premier League Cup.
