Brentford B were beaten 4-0 by FC Metalist 1925 in the Mediterranean Cup on Friday afternoon at the Pinatar Arena.
Brentford put up a good fight but were beaten by senior side, Metalist, who compete in the Ukrainian Premier League, with the team scoring two goals in either half to leave with the win.
The young Bees played a back four which consisted of Kryeece Lisbie, Val Adedokun, Benjamin Arthur and Ji-soo Kim. Riley Owen, Beuax Booth and and Max Dickov made up the central midfield positions whilst Ethan Laidlaw, Ashley Hay and Iwan Morgan formed a front three.
Brentford made a great start to the game and could have got themselves an early lead inside the opening five minutes following an excellent move.
Laidlaw did well to beat his man on the left flank before delivering a cross to the far post which found Lisbie, the winger struck the ball on the volley with his shot going inches wide of the far post.
Metalist were enjoying some good spells of possession but Brentford’s defensive structure was strong keeping out the Ukrainian side in the opening 30 minutes.
Riley Owen, who was playing as a holding midfielder, was dictating Brentford’s play as they went forward.
The youngster was involved in another good chance for Brentford with his free-kick from 25 yards going just wide of the right post.
Despite lots of positive play for the young Bees it was Metalist who grabbed the first goal of the game on 36 minutes.
A Brentford clearance following a corner fell to Dmytro Kapinus on the edge of the area with the full back striking the ball powerfully into the top left corner leaving Vincent Angelini with no chance.
Neil MacFarlane’s side may have felt hard done by that they were heading into the break a goal down but Metalist doubled their lead right before the half time whistle was blown adding insult to injury.
It was Dmytro Kapinus who found the net this time with a powerful header from inside the box.
Brentford started the second half in the worst possible way as Metalist made it 3-0 moments after the break when Yusov struck again for the Ukrainian side.
To Brentford’s credit they continued to work hard as they battled against the senior opposition.
The side were unfortunate not to pull a goal back on the hour mark when a Iwan Morgan cross aimed for Laidlaw was just cleared away moments before the striker could make contact.
A nice passage of play from Metalist ended in Yusov being brought down inside the box and slotting home his spot kick to claim his hat-trick and his sides fourth and final goal of the game.
