Brentford B played out a pre-season fixture away from home against a strong Chelsea Under-21 side on Tuesday evening.
The hosts won the game 5-1 at their Cobham training facility.
It was a fast start from the hosts who were confident in possession, and they went ahead on 12 minutes. The goal came from Ben Elliott who was perhaps allowed a little too much room on the edge of the box as he turned to shoot low past Vincent Angelini.
New signing Ethan Laidlaw, who made his first start for the young Bees then tried his luck from distance after Val Adedokun won a 50/50 challenge high up field before squaring to the Scot. His low effort took a deflection which made it a fairly routine stop for the Chelsea keeper.
One of the trialists then made an impact on 23 minutes when he chipped a wonderful pass into the path of Nathan Young-Coombes but despite the striker finding the net when he prodded home, the goal was ruled out after the Brentford number nine was adjudged to have been offside.
A minute or so later the Bees became level when Charlie Farr did wonderfully well to press high and win the ball back. He drove across goal before a Chelsea challenge came in and it fell kindly for Yogane to slot home with his left foot.
The Bees weren’t level for long, though, as the Blues continued to threaten. After the ball was given away, the home side counter-attacked and a ball in from the left caused a but of pinball before Ji-soo Kim’s clearance found Ronnie Stutter who volleyed home from a central position.
Angelini was called into action soon after as he saved from a powerful drive from Harvey Vale before Stutter then hit the cross bar after some good, incisive play from the hosts.
Chelsea extended their lead to 3-1 just before half-time when a ball was switched from left to right and despite what looked like a foul on Adedokun, one of the Chelsea players managed to win possession and cross for Stutter to sweep home from the edge to grab his second of the game.
The Bees opened the second period with a good chance when Laidlaw cleverly flicked the ball into the path of Young-Coombes. The youngster managed to get a shot away but the Chelsea keeper did well to palm the ball away.
Brierley also came close when he won possession well in the centre circle before he tried his luck from just inside the Chelsea half as he shot towards goal but the back peddling keeper managed to claim the ball in the nick of time.
It became 4-1 to the hosts on 63 minutes when a low cross from the left found Stutter who tapped home from close range. A breakaway 20 minutes from time then saw it become five for Chelsea as they countered at speed through Vale and despite the defenders rushing back he was able to poke home to round off the scoring.
