Brentford B head coach Neil MacFarlane felt his side didn't live up to the levels shown in previous months as they exited the London Senior Cup on Monday evening.

The B team took the lead through a J’Neil Bennett penalty but three second-half strikes from Hendon saw the young Bees exit the competition at the quarter-final stage.

Speaking on the defeat, MacFarlane said: “I think we just didn’t get to the levels that we have been at over the last three or four months. We didn’t deal with the basics well enough and we gave them opportunities to put the ball into the box.

“Our quality on the ball wasn’t near to what we expected and that gave them opportunities to slow the game down and put us under pressure which they did. I think overall they deserved to get the result.”

Brentford B are no stranger to Hendon having played the National League side four times over the past four seasons.

During this period the young Bees have won twice and lost twice and MacFarlane was well aware of the challenge that the opposition offered.

“We explained to the group that it would be tough," said the B team head coach. "We’ve played Hendon in two cup finals previously where we have won and lost so it’s a really tough occasion on a difficult surface.

“It was always going to be a hard night but there are no excuses, we just didn’t play well enough to get a result.”

After a frustrating opening half, the young Bees got themselves in front 10 minutes after the break when Nathan Young-Coombes was brought down by Solomon Sambou inside the Hendon box before the referee pointed to the spot.

Bennett displayed confidence as he tucked his penalty into the top right corner putting the visitors in front.

MacFarlane continued: “I thought at the start of the second half we were really good and little bits of quality started to come into our game.

“It was a terrific moment for the goal with Tony (Yogane) driving down the left-hand side and a lovely slipped pass to Coombsey (Young-Coombes) who got the penalty before J’Neil stuck it away. That got us in the ascendancy, and we had the game in at our grasp at that point but we just didn’t deal with the basics well enough."

Yogane was Brentford’s brightest spark going forward and looked a real danger at times with his blistering pace.

Talking on the youngster’s development, MacFarlane said: “He’s coming on, he’s doing really well at the training ground the last couple of months and he’s been involved in some big games for us."

MacFarlane made six changes to the team that beat Arsenal Under-21 in the Premier League Cup last week with Young Coombes making his first appearance since returning from his loan spell at AFC Wimbledon and recovering from injury.

“It's really good to see him back, he’s had a hard time through injury so it was pleasing to see him back on the pitch and getting some important minutes," said MacFarlane.

“We made a number of changes to the team that’s been playing consistently over the last two months and it gives the boys the opportunity but when they get that chance they must try to grasp it.”
