Two superb goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Ivan Toney saw Brentford draw 2-2 with Wolfsburg at the Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday.

Luca Waldschmidt put the Bundesliga side ahead within 15 minutes after a well-worked move, which finished with the forward dinking the ball over Bees goalkeeper Ben Winterbottom.

But the hosts turned the game around before half-time, with their first goal coming thanks to an inch-perfect free-kick from Mbeumo, which curled over the Wolfsburg wall, before Toney scored a stunning 45-yard strike to make it 2-1.

Wolfsburg's equaliser came with 20 minutes to play, as a free-flowing counter-attack led to 17-year-old forward Dzenan Pejcinovic scoring from close range.

The teams

Thomas Frank played a 3-4-3 at the Gtech, which saw Christian Norgaard and Bryan Mbeumo start their first games after returning from the World Cup.

Mikkel Damsgaard and Saman Ghoddos, who also played at the tournament in Qatar, played the second half in West London.

Wolfsburg, who reeled off four straight league wins to move up to seventh in the Bundesliga before the World Cup break, played a 4-3-3.

Ex-Manchester City youngster Felix Nmecha started the game in midfield, alongside former Germany international Maximilian Arnold.

First half

Ivan Toney scores v Wolfsburg

The first chance of the game fell to Ben Mee just after the ten-minute mark, as the centre-back got on the end of a corner routine which saw Mbeumo and Vitaly Janelt combine out wide, but the defender's header went over the bar from close range.

Shortly after that, Wolfsburg scored the game's opening goal, as Lukas Ambros and Waldschmidt combined well, as the former flicked the ball through the defence, before the latter delicately chipped the ball into the back of the net.

The Bees weren't behind for long, however, as Keane Lewis-Potter did well to win a free-kick on the edge of the box, before Mbeumo stepped up and curled the resulting set-piece over the wall and into the top corner.

The German outfit nearly scored a free-kick of their own soon after, as captain Arnold had a chance to find the back of the net from a similar range. His effort was heading towards the far corner but was tipped around the post and kept out well by Winterbottom.

Ten minutes before half-time, Brentford were ahead, as Toney picked up the ball on the halfway line, dribbled into the Wolfsburg half, and sent a stunning effort from 45 yards out towards goal. The goalkeeper scrambled across his line to keep it out but couldn't prevent it from nestling in the bottom corner.

Second half

Saman Ghoddos v Wolfsburg

Both teams made numerous changes at half-time, with the Bees making six ahead of the second half.

And it was one of those, Yoane Wissa, who had the opening chance of the half, but his header from inside the six-yard box was straight at the goalkeeper.

Maximilian Philipp was one of Wolfsburg's substitutes at the break and he nearly found the equaliser, as he beat the offside trap and found himself one-on-one with Winterbottom, but the Bees goalkeeper made himself big and kept out the forward's effort.

The equaliser did come minutes later, however, after a free-flowing attacking move from the German side, which saw young striker Pejcinovic finish from inside the penalty area.

Brentford had a good chance to win the game with ten minutes to play, after Ghoddos and Michael Olakigbe combined well down the right, before Ryan Trevitt - who assisted the goal against Bordeaux in Girona - put in a similarly fantastic cross into the box.

The 'keeper palmed it straight to Damsgaard who, instead of shooting, laid it onto Sergi Canos, but the Spaniard's effort was off target and went over the crossbar.
