Lasse Vibe said that the Olympic Games experience of Rio 2016 was one that he would love to repeat after he captained Denmark to the Quarter-Finals in Brazil. Last season’s joint top scorer was one of three overage players named in The Danes 18 man squad for the current games. After a draw with Iraq, victory over South Africa, and defeat to the hosts in Group A, Lasse’s Olympic dreams ended last Saturday after a 2-0 defeat to Nigeria in the last eight.
Speaking to Bees Player after returning home, Lasse said it was a great experience to be involved in an Olympic Games and something he was very proud to do. “It was a big experience for me,” said Lasse. “You sensed it from the moment that you landed. The level of intensity, the security and the interest from the media was really big. There were 50,000 in the stadium for the game against Brazil. You couldn’t hear anything or talk to your teammates even when you were in their faces. Taking everything into consideration we did well for ourselves. We nearly got to fight for medals and it was a big honour to be captain. I was proud to represent my country and it’s something that I am really happy I have done and I would do it over and over again.”
Denmark’s qualification for the Quarter-Finals meant that Lasse missed our first three league games of the season as we picked up six points from a possible nine. Whilst in Rio Lasse played every minute of The Danes four matches and he believes he is ready to come back in and help out straight away.
“I am in good shape,” said Lasse. “I have played 90 minutes four times in ten days. The games are different than in the Championship. The ref is there to use his whistle and there were lots of fouls. You would get booked within the first five minutes if you played like you did in the Championship. The intensity was a little bit lower so the games were more tactical. I feel really good and I am feel in really good shape. I am back, I am fit and I feel like I am ready to play. I want to come back and I want to contribute. I missed out on a couple of games so I have to pay back.”
Lasse featured as a late substitute on our last visit to The New York Stadium, a 2-1 defeat in February. Despite all their changes over the summer, Lasse still expects The Millers to be a tough opponent adding that it's important The Bees try and impose their style of play on the game.
“I would expect them still to be physical,” said Lasse. “They have had a change of staff and there are some new players so we will see how it is. However, we have to be better in controlling how the game goes. If we play their physical game it might be 50/50 so we have to make the odds better for ourselves by playing our style of play.”
