Ben Mee was delighted at how he and his fellow defenders kept Premier League top goalscorer Erling Haaland ‘quiet’ during our 2-1 victory over Manchester City.

It was the first game since the Norwegian centre-forward made his move to Pep Guardiola's side that he failed to have a shot on target, while his City team-mate Kevin De Bruyne also struggled to make an impact.

And Mee praised his team-mates for, not just the result against his former team, but the way the Bees performed against a ‘difficult’ City side.

He told the media after our win at the Etihad Stadium: "There have not been many times when I've been here and got a victory, so it's a nice change! To win it at the end, those great scenes and a really good performance from us as well was great.

“Coming here, you expect them to create stuff, which they did, but we kept them down to limited chances, played really well, and kept the big man (Erling Haaland) and [Kevin] De Bruyne quiet for most of it - that’s what we aimed to do.”

On Haaland, Mee added: "I thought Ethan [Pinnock] was brilliant up against him as well, he competed really well and, yeah, we defended him really well.

“It was tough, they’re a quality side and you've got to be on your toes. Those balls that are wide, his movement, getting in behind and beyond you, he’s always a threat. It was difficult.”

On the season so far, as a whole, Mee has been pleased with his first four months as a Brentford player and, after some good results against some of the best teams in the division, he wants to take that momentum into the second half of the campaign.

The defender stated: “It's been really positive start to the season for us. Obviously, the away form has not been amazing - we've been picking up draws here and there away from home.

“We were disappointed not to win our last game away from home at Nottingham Forest when we conceded late on.

“But it’s been really positive. Our home form has been really good, we've competed with some big teams - Manchester United, Chelsea, now coming here to Manchester City as well, we've got good results against them.

“Since coming here, I've been really impressed with the squad that we've got, the group, the organisation, the staff. So I think we can do really well this season.

“Hopefully we can come back in [after the World Cup break] and carry on how we’ve left it.”
