Brentford's 2-0 win over Arsenal to kick-off the Premier League season has earned extra recognition. West London beat North London on the opening evening of the campaign with The Bees scoring a goal in each half. Brentford’s first top flight game since 1947 finished with a well-earned victory thanks to goals from Sergi Canós and Christian Nørgaard.

The League Managers Association’s panel, comprising LMA Chairman Howard Wilkinson, Sir Alex Ferguson, Joe Royle, Dave Bassett, Barry Fry Paul Ince and Rachel Yankey, has determined that the LMA Performance of the Week Award, in association with Sky Sports Soccer Saturday, should go to Brentford for their win. The experienced and highly distinguished panel has managed a combined total of over 6,500 competitive matches in professional football. Brentford Head Coach Thomas Frank received a celebratory bottle of champagne, courtesy of Tanners Wines, and an LMA Performance of the Week trophy.

Canós struck midway through the first half, becoming the first Brentford player to score a top division goal since Len Townsend more than seven decades ago. Nørgaard headed home in the second half to seal a win that The Bees deserved. David Raya, in the home goal, made one spectacular save late on, but Bryan Mbeumo hit the post for The Bees and there was little doubt the better team won on the night and the LMA decided that was the best performance in the English league system last week.

It is the fourth time in two years Brentford have won the prize. Most recently, a 1-0 victory at AFC Bournemouth win ten men in late April won the award. An away win at Derby County in July 2020 and a 7-0 win over Luton Town in November 2019 earned similar recognition.
