Audrius Laucys said it was a disappointing afternoon for the Youth Team as they were held 1-1 draw by Sheffield Wednesday at Middlewood on Saturday in their final Under-18 Professional Development League Two South league match of the season.
On a dry, bobbly pitch with a strong wind making passing football difficult Jon De Souza’s side never really got into their stride.
The Bees fell behind just before half-time as Mason Duffy netted at the second attempt and it looked for a long while like that would be the only goal.
However as the game entered injury time Audrius popped up to poke home at the back post to secure a point for The Bees.
Speaking to Bees Player after the match Audrius said it was a frustrating afternoon for the young Brentford side.
While the team were pleased to extend their unbeaten run to 11 Audrius said the team were looking for more from their trip to Yorkshire.
“It was a disappointing result for us,” said Audrius.
“We came here wanting to win but it just wasn’t our day and it was a bad day at the office.
“We started off quickly but then we slowed down.
“At the end of the first-half we conceded the goal and that got into our heads.
“We started the second-half as equal teams and I think we were the better team in the second-half.
“At half-time Jon told us not to get frustrated because the game was not over.
“We just needed to get a goal and make sure that we kept doing the things that we had been doing all season.
“Even when we are behind we have always shown character to come from behind.
“We needed to keep going and not get frustrated.
“We got that late goal and it might be an important one.”
The goal keeps the pressure up on Charlton Athletic at the head of the Under-18 Professional Development League Two South.
The Addicks trail The Bees now by four points with two matches remaining against Swansea City and Crystal Palace.
The Bees have led the Under-18 Professional Development League Two South table since October but need Charlton now to drop points to pick up a first ever league title.
Audrius was pleased that The Bees were able to salvage a point from the match, one which could prove crucial when it comes to deciding the destination of the league title.
“If Charlton lose or draw one of their next two games it could be a massive goal for us,” said Audrius.
“It may win us the league.
“1-1 is not a bad result but we needed a win to secure the title.
“It is not up to us now but hopefully they will drop points and we can win the league.”
Regardless of whether they finish first or second The Bees have qualified for the end of season Play-Offs for the first time.
They will face one of the top two from the Under-18 Professional Development League Two North in the semi-final before a possible final showdown over the May Bank Holiday.
Jon De Souza’s side had won eight of their previous nine matches before two draws in recent weeks but Audrius thinks those recent dropped points will ensure that Brentford do not go into the Play-Offs over confident.
“We are very confident going into the Play-Offs,” said Audrius.
“We have drawn the last two games but to go into the Play-Offs 11 unbeaten is a really big achievement.
“Our confidence is going to be the most important thing and hopefully we can make teams fear us because we are going into the Play-Offs 11 unbeaten.
“Building up to the Play-Offs these draws might give us a good kick to make sure we play well.
“Going into the Play-Offs it is really important to play our best game and show what we are good at.
“These are the Semi-Finals and Finals so we are viewing this as if we are trying to get to our Champions League Final.”
