Brentford were saddened to hear of the recent death of former player Arthur Shaw, aged 91.

Born in Limehouse, East London, in 1924, wing half Arthur's talent was first spotted by Brentford Secretary-Manager Harry Curtis playing for local amateur side Hounslow Town in war-time. He moved to Southall and then Hayes in 1945 before signing professional forms at Griffin Park on 9 May 1946.

Arthur made his debut for The Bees at Griffin Park on 2 November 1946 in a 1-0 win against Bolton Wanderers. He joined Arsenal in April 1948 after four league appearances for Brentford but had to wait until August 1949 until he made his debut for The Gunners in a 2-1 win over Chelsea.

Shaw was part of the Arsenal side that won the 1952/53 Football League Championship. He left Highbury for Watford in June 1955 and later played for non-league Gravesend, captaining their 1957/58 Southern League title winning side.

Living in nearby Hounslow for many years after retiring from football, in later life he moved to America to be with his daughter. His death on 2 November means that Wally Bragg is the only known living survivor from Brentford’s last-ever top flight campaign in 1946/47.
