Brentford FC have appointed former player and manager Andy Scott as Chief Scout. The 43-year-old has worked alongside the Club’s scouting department for the past 15 months, and will now formally manage that operation as a full time Brentford employee. Andy will report into the Co-Directors of Football and will work with the coaching staff to plan the evolution of the playing squads.
This will be Andy’s third spell at Griffin Park. He first joined as a player in 1997 and spent almost four years at the Club, helping The Bees win promotion from the fourth tier in 1999, before leaving for Oxford United. He was forced to retire in 2005 when he was diagnosed with Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and moved in to coaching.
Andy came back to Brentford as Assistant Manager in 2007 and stepped up to the managerial role towards the end of that year. He led The Bees to promotion, again from the fourth tier, in his first full season as boss and was at the helm when Brentford reached the League Cup Fourth Round in 2010, only the second time the Club has ever got to the last 16 of that competition. He left in 2011 and has had spells managing Rotherham United and Aldershot Town.
Phil Giles said: "I am absolutely delighted that Andy is returning to Brentford in the role of Chief Scout. I have been working with Andy over the last year or more, and he has been invaluable in identifying players and providing detailed scouting reports on all of our targets. His dedication to his work and determination to help Brentford achieve success in the future has been exemplary.
“Over recent weeks the Club has run a full and proper process to identify our new Chief Scout. Andy submitted his application for the role early in that process. However, we felt that the right thing to do was to interview as many candidates as possible, some on more than one occasion, and the standard of applicants was very high.
“Ultimately, we felt that the best option was to appoint Andy to the role, given the outstanding work he has done over recent months, his existing knowledge of the Club and his work ethic and integrity. I look forward to working with Andy closely during this transfer window and in the future as we build as strong a squad as we possibly can."
