Andre Gray said his first Sky Bet Championship goal was a special moment for him.

The striker scored the first in Brentford’s 2-0 win at Rotherham United yesterday.

It came at the end of a fairly even first half when Jota and Alex Pritchard combined to free Alan Judge, the ball was played through and Andre cut back inside before lashing home.

Andre said he took nine games to get off the mark last season, a campaign that eventually yielded 30 goals in all competitions for Luton Town before a summer move to TW8.

“I don’t remember too much about the goal,” said the striker, speaking to Bees Player after the win.

“Alan Judge played me through and it opened up.

“I had to pick my spot.

“I might have put too much on it but it went in so I don’t care.

“It is special to get my first Championship goal.

“I came here to score goals.

“Last year I took nine games to get my first and I went on to score a few.

“Hopefully this will be the same.”

Andre said Rotherham presented a tough test.

The Yorkshire outfit are a physical side, with powerful defenders and a plan to play the ball long to striker Alex Revell and try to play off him.

Rotherham hit the woodwork twice in the first half and Andre said that might be the bit of luck Brentford needed, which they had not got in recent games against Birmingham City and AFC Bournemouth that they had not won.

The striker explained he was asked to run the channels today and get The Bees up the pitch.

Brentford sealed the win when Nick Proschwitz tapped home in stoppage time.

“It was a tough game,” he said.

“I had a different role today.

“I was asked to run the channels and hold the ball up.

“That is something I am working on and will continue to work on.

“It was difficult but I had to get us up the pitch.

“I didn’t think I was at my best but we got the win, that is all that matters.

“We needed a bit of luck today and we got it, perhaps we haven’t had it in some other games.

“They pushed us to the end today and we got the second goal.”

Andre said Brentford were trying to stick to their game plan and keep passing the ball but had to adapt to the challenge they faced.

He paid tribute to central defenders James Tarkowski and Harlee Dean for their work in ensuring Brentford got the win.

“We have to adapt to the game,” said the striker.

“We wanted to keep our philosophy and keep passing the ball.

“We didn’t want to get in to a battle, that is their game and we will lose it.

“We don’t have the players to do that.

“We wanted to stick to what we know and try to come out on top.

“I think we did it fantastically.

“The centre halves were outstanding.

“They had a massive job to do and did it fantastically.

“We had to get chances and put them away; we put two away but could still be better.”

One sour note for Brentford was a serious looking injury suffered by striker Scott Hogan.

He collapsed holding his knee with no-one around him ten minutes after coming on for his Championship debut.

The striker, recently returned from an ankle injury, was withdrawn on a stretcher and left the ground on crutches.

Andre said the squad would rally round the injured forward in the days and weeks ahead.

“It was hard to take,” said Andre.

“He is one of our team mates and is a valuable player for us.

“It is hard to see.

“He has worked hard to get back and you don’t want to see that.

“He is a strong lad and will get through it.

“We are a tight group; he has our support and is in high spirits.

“I am sure he will be fine.”

Brentford have eight points from five games so far this season.

They have only lost once – to Bournemouth – and drew with Charlton Athletic and Birmingham, a game in which they had captain Tony Craig sent off inside the first 15 minutes.

The Bees go in to the international break eighth in the table.

“Last week against Birmingham we came from a goal down playing 80 minutes with ten men,” said Andre.

“We could have won that game.

“We played well against Bournemouth as well.

“We are happy with the points tally, we could have got more but we can push on.

“We have some momentum now.

“We can go to training and work on a few things and come back for the next game.

“The games have been tough and it is good to get a break and rest up.”
