Brentford may have slipped to a disappointing defeat against Everton on Saturday, but another bright performance from Mathias Jensen was one positive to take from the 3-1 reverse at Gtech Community Stadium.

The Danish midfielder's tenacity, intelligence and eye for goal were all on display as he tried to turn the tide against the Toffees.

With Brentford trailing to Abdoulaye Doucouré's early goal, Jensen was involved twice in the Bees' equaliser - first flicking the ball into Bryan Mbeumo's path to break Everton's midfield press and then finishing clinically from Vitaly Janelt's pinpoint pass.

The goal marked Jensen's second Premier League strike of the campaign following his free-kick against Bournemouth, and his shooting stats currently make for impressive reading.

In fact, no player in the top flight has a better shot conversion rate than the Dane this season: Jensen netting two of his four efforts (50 per cent) on goal.

What makes Jensen's two strikes even more impressive is that, measured against Opta's expected goals metric, he had no right to score them. The 27-year-old's xG this season is a mere 0.2, which means he has outperformed his xG by a whopping +1.8 so far this term.

Although his first-half strike against the Toffees only proved to be a consolation, Jensen's goals are a massive bonus given his impressive contribution across the board for the Bees this term.

Best known for his distribution and intelligence, Jensen's passing stats in 2023/24 highlight these strengths; an enviable ability to refocus attacks clearly underlined by his seven successful switches of play - a total no Premier League midfielder can top.

Brentford head coach Thomas Frank highlighted the Bees' quality and decision-making on the ball as an area to improve after the Everton loss and there is no doubt Jensen is a key man in this regard.

Ranking eighth in the division for successful dead-ball passes, with 59, Jensen is also among the top 10 players in the top flight for accurate crosses (9) and his ability to hurl in dangerous long throws is another formidable weapon.

Frank has called for his players to "bounce back" against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup this week, and Jensen's tenacity in the tackle could also be key come Wednesday night.

Jensen (10) is one of only 16 Premier League players to win possession back for their team on more than 10 occasions this season, and that kind of ball-winning ability will be handy against a Gunners side that pose very different problems to the Toffees.
