Brentford welcome Frank Onyeka and Yoane Wissa back from their Africa Cup of Nations adventures with both players having had long tournaments going until the final weekend.

Onyeka was close to bringing a winner's medal back to west London with the midfielder's Nigeria falling at the final hurdle against an Ivory Coast team who looked destined to win it after having been so fortunate to scrape through the group stage.

The 26-year-old had a superb tournament with the Super Eagles though and can be proud of his input.

Onyeka started all seven of Nigeria's games and was a vital part of José Peseiro's side – accumulating a total of 608 minutes.

During that time, the Brentford man made 14 tackles to win possession back for his team, more than any other player in the tournament.

Having said that, Onyeka did also make the third most fouls in the tournament (18 behind team-mates Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen) so if he wasn't getting the ball back he was at least making sure the opposition wasn't going to get any further.

Of course, we don't want to give the impression Onyeka spent his entire tournament flying into tackles. The midfielder also read the game excellently, making 11 interceptions – no one at AFCON managed more.

Also involved in AFCON was Yoane Wissa representing DR Congo, the country of his parents having been born in France.

And like fellow Bee Onyeka, Wissa was an important part of his country's campaign.

Wissa played in all seven of the Leopards' games, starting in each of them except the third-place play-off where he came on in the 68th minute for a total of 563 minutes.

The Brentford forward took 19 shots in total during the tournament with only the aforementioned Osimhen registering more efforts (24). Five of those efforts hit the target with seven going off target and a further seven being blocked. In fact, no other player had more blocked shots than Wissa.

Of Wissa's five on-target shots two were converted: the first an equaliser in DR Congo's opening game (a 1-1 draw with Zambia) and the other from the penalty spot to make it 2-1 in their 3-1 quarter-final victory over Guinea.

Wissa's dribbling was also important for DR Congo, with the player finishing in the top 10 for the total number of dribbles in the tournament (17), more than the likes of Ismaïla Sarr and Osimhen (16).

And while we talked earlier about Onyeka's fouls during the competition, it was the opposite for Wissa. The 27-year-old was the fourth-most fouled player at AFCON, suffering 16 fouls in total (behind Ademola Lookman and Georges-Kévin Nkoudou – both fouled 17 times – as well as Franck Kessié, 18).

Now after doing their part for their respective countries both players will have to focus once again on the Premier League as the Bees look ahead to an exciting run of games.
