Brentford Under-18s fell to a 2-0 defeat to British Airways on Tuesday night, bringing an end to their Middlesex Senior Cup run.
Travelling to Berkeley Fields the young Bees performed strongly, however it wasn't enough to book their place in the next round of the competition.
Under the lights the young Bees started the better of the two sides, dominating possession across the opening 10 minutes and looking calm playing out from the back.
Micaiah Fanoiki put in a dangerous cross from the right side early on, however the ball skipped past multiple players in the box without a Brentford boot making contact.
On 19 minutes the hosts pieced together a promising move going forward, Joe Barnieh finding space to shoot in the box but putting his strike over the bar.
This began a swing of momentum for British Airways. Four minutes later Charlie George found space outside the box and fired at goal, Brentford goalkeeper Connor Wolfheimer diving quickly to his left to tip the ball out for a corner.
The ensuing corner was met by the hosts’ captain, Ben Forde, his effort skimming off the bar and out of play.
Wolfheimer was called into action multiple times as a busy five-minutes ensued for the goalkeeper.
As the hosts broke away on the counterattack, Wolfheimer saved a strong strike, the ball rebounding to Barnieh who fired at goal, the Brentford goalkeeper there to save it again.
Three minutes later a British Airways free-kick bounced close to the goal line off the pack, Wolfheimer there to tip it away from danger before it could be met by an attacker.
The stranglehold was broken on 38 minutes as the hosts went ahead. A loose Brentford pass in defence was pounced on, Herman Quaynor there to tap in an easy goal from a cross from the right side.
Out of the break the young Bees mirrored their start to the first half and asserted their dominance on the game.
Breaking forward on 51 minutes, Fanoiki played a short pass to Naeem Giscombe who met the ball at pace, but his shot was blocked. The rebound fell to Nathaniel Ogungbemi, but his strike sailed over the bar.
After a fast start to the half the game eased into a steady rhythm, both sides enjoying time on the ball, but unable to threaten in the final third.
Brentford came close to breaking the stranglehold on 73 minutes. Beau Redknapp’s cross from the right side found Yerime Ouattara, but his strike sailed over the bar.
Less than a minute later the hosts went one better and doubled their lead, Sam Healy able to find the back of the net.
Despite going two goals down Gary McDermott’s side continued to press as they looked to remain in the game.
Redknapp was at it again on 84 minutes, this time finding Jai Bansoodeb with a slick through ball, but the shot went right of the goal, the game remaining 2-0 at the final whistle.
The young Bees return to action at Wheatsheaf Park on 18 October against QPR.
