Millwall’s 2017/18 season

League Position: 8th

Average league attendance: 13,368

Top league goal-scorer: Lee Gregory, George Saville (10)

Last season Millwall were the dark horse of the Sky Bet Championship. A team that nobody expected to be so high up the table, yet one that was pushing teams aside week-by-week to get into the top six.

Even our own efforts at The Den were shrugged off by a Neil Harris side who were disciplined and controlled the game their own way. An eighth place finish was the final result as the results themselves fell away towards the end of the season.

This time around, Harris has some recruiting to do in the summer to try and bolster the front line, where the team looked most vulnerable in 17/18. He will certainly be able to rely on his goalkeeper Jordan Archer, putting in several memorable MOTM performances and our one to watch later in this preview.

The Manager

A legend on the pitch, Neil Harris is fast becoming a legend off it too as he continues his remarkable managerial job at The Den. The 40-year-old spent ten years with Millwall over two spells. He scored 138 goals in all competitions, beating the previous record held by Teddy Sheringham. Harris also battled and beat testicular cancer during a playing career that took him to Cardiff City and Nottingham Forest and Gillingham but was mostly spent at Millwall.

Harris had a spell as caretaker boss during the 2013/14 season, having worked with the Under-21 side at The Den after his playing career ended. When Holloway left, Harris took over again but couldn’t keep Millwall in the second tier. He was given the job permanently in the summer of 2015 and in two full seasons has led The Lions to the Play-Off Final and then promotion.

The Key Man

Goalkeeper Jordan Archer was the star of the show last season, putting in several big displays when The Lions needed him most. A string of saves in their match with Brentford proved he was certainly not going to be easily beaten, as so many other teams found out last term.

His form towards the end of the season was one of the main reasons Millwall climbed so high, with clean sheets in games against Bristol City, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

The 25-year-old started his career with Tottenham Hotspur before loan spells to the likes of Wycombe Wanderers and Northampton Town. He settled at Millwall in 2015 before he was named Player of the Season a year later. In his form, he looks set to be a big presence for them next season.
